The Women’s Varsity Lacrosse Team kicked off their 2017 Season at home under rainy skies with a win against Cincinnati’s Kings’ Lady Knights with a final score of 11 Beavers – 10 Knights.
Despite the lack of a working sound system on the field, both teams led the fans in singing the National Anthem “a cappella.” Junior Madalyn Frye, started off the game with two goals in the 19th and 20th minutes of the first half. The Knights started off with a yellow card violation and then a goal in the 16th minute, making the score 2-1 Beavers. Sophomore Goalkeeper Abby Tussey held the Knights with a block and a save through the 13th minute. Senior Amanda Bowlsby, Junior Alyssa Hinton, and Senior Sabra Woodruff all added to the Beavers’ tally, holding the lead at the end of the first half to 5-4.
The misty rain came to an end as the second half began. The Lady Knights came out with 2 quick goals in the first two minutes, pulling ahead of the Beavers 6-5. Bowlsby answered bringing the score to a tie 6-6. Senior Harmony Pierce knocked down 2 goals and Frye added a third behind-the-back shot that allowed the Beavers to pull ahead 9-7 by 12:36 in the half. Senior Megan Miller added her shot to the total of 10 after the Kings fouled her near the crease. The Lady Knights tried to power back, especially during a power play that forced Beavers’ Woodruff into the penalty box, adding 2 goals with the Beavers up 10-9 at 4:37 left in the second half. Each teamed added one more goal each in the last minutes, but the Beavers held possession of the ball the last 40 seconds, denying the Knights another opportunity to tie.
